Copying from Footprint (unlocked primitive) to PCB does not work

Created: March 28, 2021 | Updated: August 12, 2021

I can't select primitives of mechanical layers on a footprint and copy them to a mechanical layer on the PCB. I can only bring over the primitives to the PCB by changing the layer assignment in the properties panel. However, the primitives are still tide to the component footprint. How do I copy primitives from the footprint to the PCB?

Starting in Version: 18.0
Up to Version: Current

Solution Details

Child Objects such as component primitives cannot be copied and pasted individually - only free primitives.  This is intended behavior.

To copy component primitives you would have use Tools ► Convert ► Explode Component to Free Primitives first.  You can then undo (Ctrl+Z), to get it back as a component.
